Anyone else having problems?

for the past few days I have been getting

Warning Failed to get podcast index from site

when trying to download the podcast info

is this a general problem now or a temporary BBC glitch?

I use the PVR scheduler which has been downloading a few podcasts before the last couple of days

I tried a manual refresh as well to no avail

Code:
get_iplayer --refresh --type=podcast
I have been trying to download
Friday Night Comedy
and
comedy of the week

I've been having the same problem since morning of Sat 2/Apr.

The Failure messages come up pretty much instantly so It looks more like get_iplayer can't resolve the DNS for a site rather than a timeout failure because it's not getting a response.

user-585

It seems to be a 404 - Page not found.

Running the refresh with --verbose shows that the page it is trying to access is http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/ppg.xml and trying that in a browser returns a 404 error.

The podcast index data is indeed gone.  No great surprise - that data source was obsolete long ago, so get_iplayer has been living on borrowed time. I planned to deprecate and then remove podcast support from get_iplayer anyway, but it appears the BBC may have beaten me to it.  If the podcast index doesn't reappear within a week, it is probably gone for good.

thanks for the info. there's not a lot I record from podcasts, just the friday night comedy and comedy of the week, so I can add the progs for friday night comedy to the radio selections. comedy of teh week is a little harder as it tends to be odds and sods, but it will speed things up if I dont use podcasts as they take ages to download the cache

I have restored podcast support in the development version of get_iplayer (see installation docs in wiki for how to obtain). However, be advised that podcast support will still be deprecated in the next release.

Thanks for your continuing support.

I know the podcasts are easy to pick up by other methods, but I will miss the ability to grab something on a topic of interest from across the bbc's output by a simple one line command rather than having to search through the numerous websites! Mind you, I think the podcasts are being would down slowly anyway - there used to be radio 2 & 6 music ones that are no longer maintained.

Two more feeds which I think have a longer life-expectancy are:

http://polling.bbc.co.uk/podcasts.json

http://polling.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/featured.json

Today, I notice that the podcasts were all downloaded - the feed is back up (though for how long? ... and I've already gone to using a podcast client)

Thanks for the update. You should definitely stick with a podcast client, in which case you may find this useful:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts.opml

It's the podcast index in more common OPML form.
